i'm barack obama, and i approved this message. >> coming up, storms sweeping through parts of the area, breaking the heat but leaving new problems behind. >> of strong storms will get coming up later tonight. >> power outages heat and a terrible fire. we will explain in a live report. >> live and in h.d. -- you are watching abc 7 news at 6:30, on your side. >> you have probably seen and heard it -- the heavy storms moving through that area right now, giving a break from heat but knocking power back out for thousands of people. >> let's get straight to a check on where the storms stand right now. >> the good news is we start off

here with a heat advisory that has been cancelled and a shrinking severe thunderstorm watch area. take a look at what is going on at this hour -- in the district and montgomery county, anything is shaded in pink, you are under a watch and tell time clock tonight. take a look at the super doppler radar and head over to southern cal for a county where we have the severe thunderstorm warning for about another 45 minutes as the cell moves off to the south and east at around 20 miles an hour. prince frederick is right under it right now. another to the south and west across the northern neck of virginia. look at the highs today -- another record-breaking day --

102 degrees. temperatures have cooled into -- have cooled thanks to the thunderstorms. a full forecast and more details, plus you might have heard a big boom in upper northwest d.c. -- we will talk about a possible lightning strike. >> thank you. pepco customers without power just got their power back on today and now many people are dealing with the power problems again. the current storm is heading northern virginia hardest. dominion of reporting more than 20,000 people without a light ton. >> we will finally break the record heat wave. today proved to be another difficult day for many people. let's get more on how people dealt with this last day of

extreme temperatures. >> they're happy to see the heat ago for sure. typically those places would be filled with people wanting to take their dinner outdoors but people have just started to venture outside and high heat has hurt businesses and people's health. even though attempting to salvage their regular routine or seeking refuge. >> it is oppressive. >> this by coast -- bicyclist was just trying to make it until noon. >> it is going to be close to shutting it down and some air- conditioning and a tall cold one. >> people were roasting as they tried to enjoy the final few hours of their weekend. but with the rise in mercury comes the risk for health problems. the risk was nearly too much for this person. she said she felt a fainting spell within minutes. >> i felt dizzy and i got a

ringing in my years and had to sit down. >> others were dousing themselves with water. >> the heat gave me a headache. >> of the heat wave has been a bust for business. what would typically be prime real estate is a ghost town. manager and have it next riverside grill says it will take a cool down for business to heat up. >> people like to eat out when its 100 degrees outside. it is what it is. >> metro trains are running on time. because of the heat on the green line, trains are running below 35 miles an hour, meaning all lines are experiencing some sort of delay. >> here is a good illustration of how hot things got -- the

tarmac got so hot at reagan national airport during the heat wave that a small plane's tires sink into it. this photograph claims to show the wheels stuck in the asphalt tarmac. 35 passengers and crew members had to get off the plane so that it could be towed. the plane was on its way to charleston when the sinking feeling sat in. it was able to leave a few hours later. as you watch the storms moved through the area, if you see damage, you can send us your photographs. the pictures could end up on the air or on our web site, wjla.com. more on the storm's coming up in a few. >> in other news, search crews found three children lea creek this morning. the unidentified children were last seen playing in a church parking lot yesterday. their parents reported them missing this morning. crews found the bodies of 212 year-old and an eight year-old

at around 10:00 this morning in a nearby creek. officials believe they drowned and do not suspect foul play. >> an early-morning fire has displaced dozens of families. the fire ripped through an apartment building on tiger lily path. residents were able to escape but many units were destroyed. >> you can see behind me how the power -- how the fire gouged out a second -- you can actually see the sky through the roots there. this is considered a total loss for the residents here. the finish to a terrible rate -- terrible week. >> there were flames away from the first floor to the third floor. >> open the front door and you could feel the heat. >> and of the chaos from the early morning blaze. >> get out of there now, it's a huge fire and i looked around and was like all my god. >> firefighters were called at

about 5:45 and on this section of the three story building in flames. >> at least 40 residents awoke to the sound of blurring alarms. day and 70 others in neighboring buildings fled for their lives. >> when i came outside, there was nothing but flames. everyone was running and screaming and trying to make sure everyone was out of the building. >> everybody did escape safely. as crews began working, these now homeless residents reflect on a terrible week. >> we just had the power outage and everything like that. >> days without power and now this. >> it should be a wake-up call for everybody. you wake up and don't know what's going to happen. >> now this woman is thinking about what is truly important. >> i was praying that everyone

got out alive. that the main thing. >> a lot of scary moments. you can see the gas grill and propane tank. they obviously did not explode. no official cause for the fire and amazingly no one was hurt. >> thank you. in the meantime, a party and the fight -- that is what led to the death of a young man in indian head overnight. authorities were called to investigate an alleged shooting. they did not find anyone shot but did learn and 18-rolled was being treated at a local hospital -- and 18-year-old was being treated at a local hospital. he later died because of his injuries. three people were killed in separate instances across the district. two of the victims were shot and the other was stabbed. investigators say it does not appear the murders are related. police are offering a $25,000

>> other parts of the country are snapping out of my interest heat wave, but it has come with a price. violent thunderstorms have rolled through parts of new jersey and took down trees and power lines with it. one woman was struck by lightning and is in critical condition. two workers were killed in texas when powerful winds toppled a construction crane at the university of texas campus. >> in colorado, firefighters have had their hands full bat line wild fires and now heavy rain is causing a problem near boulder, colorado.

the biggest wild fire near colorado springs is now 98% contained. the fire has caused more than $110 million in damage. >> the storms continue to roll through parts of our area. >> quite a scare tonight. >> a positive light in strikes -- a lot of people thought it was an earthquake in upper northwest d.c.. it is strongest -- some of the strong as lightning strikes. it lasted about five or 10 seconds. the skies outside right now are not so bad, mostly cloudy, giving us a bit of a cool them but not before we broke yet another record at brigham national airport. 102 degrees working our fourth day in a row at 100 degrees or better at reagan national. the average is 89 degrees and we

you still have the severe thunderstorm watch a botched -- watched spots in pink. this is where they have a severe thunderstorm morning until 7:15. these storms are moving toward the south and east and have the potential for strong wind, upward of 60 and 70 miles an hour. behind us, things are beginning to settle down and we will look for quieter conditions overnight and into tomorrow. this is the future cast. we have not seen temperatures like this in quite some time. it's still going to feel a bit humid but not as hot outside. showers and thunderstorms becoming more scattered after about 10:00 and temperatures falling into the '70s. isolated storms limited to a 30% chance and the mid '80s for your
